How do I become a Leader?
To be a leader, you will be given some extra training to ensure you are suitably equipped to perform your new role.
You will need to have:
- Been inducted and trained on an approved Leaders Training Course.
- A valid first aid certificate (no older than two years).
- A current River Safety Rescue Course Certificate (for river paddling only).
- A VHF Operators Licence - unless paddling only in terrain that make them inoperative,e.g. Mohaka River.
- Complete and log at least five hours approved professional development per year.
- Your personal equipment inspected by the Operations Manager every 6 months.
- Lead at least two trips per year.
- To be re-validated every two years on presentation of your log book.
Leader Training/ Induction
Upon entry to the Leader training program, you will be asked to:
- Complete an approved Leaders training program.
- Minimum requirement: NZKI 1 Star Sea kayak or NZKI 2 Star White water
- Read and sign the Yakity Yak Kayak Club SMS and Handbook.
- Hazard identification and remedies discussed with operations manager. Focusing on recognizing hazards and how to deal with them.
- Read through the accident register and review with operations manager. This will demonstrate problems that have occurred in the past.
- Discuss the hazards and ways to recognise drug and alcohol abuse annually using the Substance Abuse in the Work Place document on-line.
Ongoing Leader Training
Leaders must maintain a Log Book which will show at least five hours approved professional development per year.
Leader training is available on request and all leaders must undertake to complete regular training.
