Hauraki Gulf Island Overnight trip

This trip is suitable for Intermediate and strong beginners. This trip will be between 32 and 48 km (if paddling to Rakino Island) so a good level of fitness is recommended.

  • 14 km to Home Bay
  • 16 km to and from Rakino (optional)
  • 18 km Return to St Heliers (via Motuihe and Motukorea)

Meet at St Heliers boat ramp at 07:00 to be on the water at 08:00 on Saturday 8th February. Estimated time off the water is 16:00 on Sunday 9th February.

Tides:

  • Sat 8th – Low Tide 10:21 am (1m), High Tide 4:34 pm (2.9m)
  • Sun 9th – Low Tide 11:26 am (1m), Hight tide 5:41 pm (2.9m)

Trip Plan: Launch at St Heliers Boat Ramp, Head out towards East beaches of Rangitoto. Continue around to Home Bay. Land and setup camp. If paddlers are keen, head out to Sandy Bay at Rakino. Return and spend night at home bay.

Following morning, return via Motuihe Island and Browns Island

This trip is weather dependent. The cost of the camp sites are $10 and can be booked at Home Bay, Motutapu Island conservation campsite: Motutapu Island Recreation Reserve, Auckland region. I would recommend only booking once confirmation that the trip is proceeding (2 days before).

What to bring (recommended, but not exhaustive list):

  • Kayak
  • Paddle
  • Spray skirt
  • VHF (If you have one)
  • PLB (if you have one).
  • Change of clothes
  • Sunscreen
  • Hat
  • Helmet (if you are planning on rock gardening)
  • Lunch
  • Sufficient water for the days (with a little extra)
  • Rock Shoes / booties
  • Bilge pump (recommended)
  • Tent and groundsheet
  • Camping mattress
  • Sleeping Bag
  • Sufficient food for 2 days
  • Gas Cooker (if planning cooked meals)
  • Any additional items for meals / meal prep
  • Towel
  • Walking shoes / shoes for around camp
  • Head Torch
  • First Aid kit (recommended)
  • Any required medication
  • Bug Spray

There is water on Motutapu Island, however it is untreated and it is  recommended to bring a method of purifying water if you are wanting to use it.
