Winter Kayak Development Course

Welcome to the winter kayak development course

This course is for those who have completed the Yakity Yak enrolment course and wish to expand their kayaking skills and knowledge along with having loads of fun with new friends. If you have not completed this course we have one available on Sunday the 2nd of July. Bookings for that course can be made here.

Outline for Development Course:

Pool

Three pool sessions at AUT Millennium Pool,17 Antares Place Mairangi Bay on Wednesday evenings on the 5th, 12th and 19th of July, from 7pm to 8.30pm. During these sessions we will develop your water confidence along with self and group rescue and start you on learning to eskimo roll.

Theory

Three evening theory sessions on Wednesday evenings on the 26th July and the 2nd and 9th of August at Canoe & Kayak Albany 2/20 Constellation Drive, Mairangi Bay from 7.30 to 9pm.  These will cover weather and navigation, planning packing and camping, equipment design and use and maintenance, rescue systems and rescue management.

On water sessions.

Three Sunday afternoon skills development sessions 1pm to 4pm on the 9th, 16th and 30th of July with back up options on the 6th and 13th of August if the weather is not great on July dates. These will be based at a North Shore Beach/ lake or estuary depending on weather and tides. These will build on your personal paddle and kayaking skills, with the aim to develop a strong competent paddler capable of enjoying a wider range of kayaking adventures. We have allocated five dates for the three Sunday sessions; this is to allow for bad weather days so please keep all five Sunday afternoons free.

Outcome for attendees.

To develop your skills, knowledge, and confidence along with a network of mates, allowing you to expand your kayaking adventures and to make the most out of the opportunities that the Yakity Yak Club and New Zealand kayaking has to offer.

Equipment.

Hire equipment is available and will be transported to the Sunday sessions by the Canoe & Kayak team at the cost of $40 per kayak. Participants must have suitable personal paddling clothing. Only Canoe & Kayak kayaks can be used in the pool for cleaning and congestion issues, there is no extra charge for the use of these.

The course is run by the Canoe & Kayak team of experienced instructors.

Cost.

The cost is $575 and is subsidised by 50% by the Yakity Yak Club making the members cost $287.50.
