THIS TRIP IS NOW FULLY BOOKED

Labour Weekend 23rd - 26th Oct

This fully catered trip will be run solely in open (Canadian) canoes so leave your kayak behind and discover the fun of paddling in tandem, carrying what you need with you (and being able to reach it whilst on the water), and running a few small rapids to add even more adventure.

The trip will start on the river at Mokai and covers the deep papa gorges down the river to Ohingaiti. We pass under several of the huge viaducts on the main trunk railway, as well as the bungy and rope swing at Gravity Canyon.

The three day trip takes in the end of the upper gorge of this part of the river - lots of small rapids. The first day has some of the best scenery on the river and a rapid every 50m or so. The river gets easier the further down we get.

As you've all done some paddling before then we know that this trip wont disappoint you.

We will travel down to Taihape on the Friday afternoon to our accommodation the Rusty Nail Backpackers to be ready for the early morning start on the Saturday. This trip will be fully catered and will include canoe hire, shuttles, food and accommodation.

This is what they advise to Bring

Clothing: Consider your clothing in two parts—Firstly, what you will wear canoeing and secondly, what you will need in camp. Also work on the assumption that your canoeing clothes will get wet so you must have a dry change for campwear.

Canoeing Clothes: Swimwear. Sandshoes, sandals or wetsuit booties. Shorts. Sunhat. Wollen or polypropylene top. Waterproof lightweight jacket or parka. Windproof leggings (optional). Woolen socks. Tracksuit or polypro pants (not jeans). Light gloves (for warmth or blisters)

Camping Clothes: Comfortable shoes. Complete change of warm clothes. Spare lightweight top. Warm socks. Towels (2 small). Warm hat (depending on time of year)

Footwear: We advise everyone to wear something on his or her feet at all times. There will be occasions when you will need to step out of your canoe into river shallows. In these slippery conditions sandshoes or sandals are better than jandals.

Miscellaneous Items:  Sleeping bag. Extra snacks. Sunglasses (with strap). Torch. Insect repellent. Suncreen. Camera (with spare film). Plastic bags/rubbish bags. Umbrella (optional). Water bottle. Book or other reading material. First Aid Kit. Spare rope. Personal medication (if required). Other personal items.

Price with discount: $697.50 per adult
price includes tents and camping equipment (except sleeping bags which you'll need to bring), all meals and drink, canoe equipment hire, guides and transfers to and from the river. Excludes Friday evening accommodation at Rusty Nail Backpackers in Taihape.

This trip is being run by Canoe Safaris - local knowledge and experience is always best!
Cost for Rusty Nail backpackers is $25pp cash.
